SambaはGNU General Public Licenseの下でライセンスされるフリーソフトウェア。
1992年以来、DOSやWindowsの全バージョン、OS/2、Linuxやその他多くの SMB/CIFSプロトコルを使う全てのクライアントに、安全で安定した高速なファイルと印刷サービスを提供してきた。
Linux/Unixサーバー・デスクトップをActive Directory環境にシームレスに統合するための重要なコンポーネントで、ドメインコントローラーとしても、通常のドメインメンバーとしても 機能する。
